Current Events & Ethics

Welcome to Current Events & Ethics!!!

with Mr. Farrand & Ms. Mosier

Ethics is a year-long introductory course discussing moral principles of right & wrong. This course focuses on 10 main points:

1. We will openly discuss our thoughts on various topics to reveal our beliefs. This kind of discussion opens us to the diverse experiences of others in the class while also confronting our own contradictions.
“It is virtually impossible in many instances to know what we believe in daily life until we engage others in dialogue.”Christopher Phillips
2. We will question, analyze, & challenge our thoughts and assumptions about world issues.
3. We will be open to hearing opposing viewpoints and opinions that differ from our own.
4. We will contemplate WHY we think/act the way we do and HOW we make difficult decisions and moral judgments.
5. We will become a more informed citizen that is more empathetic towards others.
6. We will consider principles that guide our thinking about specific questions of right and wrong.
7. We will learn how to be more effective speakers and how to argue more competently.
8. We will discuss morality through a number of ethical scenarios weekly in class.
9. We will consider 9 important issues in depth: CLONING, POLICE MILITARIZATION, DRUG ABUSE, FEMINISM, SEXUAL INTIMACY, DISCRIMINATION, ENVIRONMENT ETHICS, PSYCHOLOGY OF FORTUNE TELLING/MAGICIANS, & SOCIOLOGY OF THE MEDIA.
